Using Aromatherapy During Your Pregnancy

Aromatherapy OilsAs with all holistic treatments there are some things that are avoided during certain stages of pregnancy, some that are contraindicated, and some that are safe throughout the entire pregnancy. The same is true for aromatherapy oils.

Below is a list of oils that are safe to use during your entire pregnancy, some after certain stages, and some that are contraindicated throughout your entire pregnancy.

When mixing aromatherapy oils during pregnancy, you would use 10 drops of essential oils to 2 tablespoons of carrier oil.

For an aromatherapy bath you would add 6 to 10 drops of essential oils into the tub and mix well before getting in.

For a steam inhalation or warm compress you would use 3 to 6 drops of essential oil in a bowl of warm or hot water.

SAFE TO USE THROUGH OUT AND IT USE:

Bergamot – analgesic, anti-septic, anti-depressant, uplifting and refreshing. Helpful for cystitis during pregnancy

Grapefruit – astringent, digestive aid, lymphatic stimulant. Helps with water retention.

Lavender – anti-septic, antibiotic, anti-fungal, anti-depressant, healing, relaxing. Helps soothe aches and pains of pregnancy, encourages cell renewal and helps with fluid retention.

Lemon – anti-septic, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, astringent, stimulant, tonic. Useful as an inhalant for morning sickness and in massage for varicose veins.

Mandarin – anti-septic, refreshing, tonic, mild relaxant. Can ease fluid retention in leg and ankle massages

Neroli – anti-septic, anti-depressant, anti-spasmodic, anti-inflammatory, relaxing. Useful in pregnancy to promote healthy skin cell regeneration and for easing nervous tension.

Patchouli – anti-septic, anti-depressant, anti-inflammatory, nerve sedative. Eases confusion, indecision and apathy.

Petitgrain – Anti-septic, anti-depressant, sedative, refreshing, tonic. Helpful in dealing with pre or postpartum depression.

Rosewood –Anti-septic, sedative.

Sandalwood – Anti-septic, anti-inflammatory, antidepressant, sedative. Helpful for cystitis during pregnancy.

Tangerine – Anti-spasmodic, lymphatic stimulant, calming, sedative. Helps to prevent stretch marks.

Tea Tree – Antibiotic, antiseptic, antifungal, antiviral, disinfectant. Can be used to treat thrush during pregnancy.

Ylang Ylang – Anti-septic, anti-depressant, aphrodisiac, sedative, lowers blood pressure. Restorative when feeling overworked or tense.

SAFE TO USE AFTER THE 1ST TRIMESTER:

Camphor, carrot seed, citronella, cypress, cypress, frankincense, geranium, lavender, Peru balsam, pine needle, rosewood, sandalwood

SAFE TO USE AFTER THE 2ND TRIMESTER:

Neroli, Palmarosa, lemongrass, sandalwood, petitgrain

SAFE TO USE AFTER THE 3RD TRIMESTER (LABOUR):

Clary sage, jasmine

OILS TO AVOID DUE TO THEIR EMMENAGOGIC PROPERTIES (they can induce menstruation): Angelica, chamomile (German and Roman), Cinnamon, Clary Sage, Ginger, Jasmine, Juniper, Myrrh, Peppermint, Rose, Rosemary, Sweet Fennel, Sweet Marjoram

OTHER OILS TO AVOID DURING PREGNANCY: Basil, Cedarwood, Clove, Nutmeg, Sweet Birch, Thyme, Vanilla, Penny Royal

If you think you may be allergic to an oil, do a patch test first.
